Welcome to VoteJJ.com
My name is JJ (John James) Swiontek. (I have my video greeting to you as well
I'm running for Colorado House of Representatives for District 5.
If you don't know which District you are in, then go to comaps.org and that site can tell you. You may need to use the zip+4 link to find your full zip code.
This web site is a 'work-in-progress'. Over the next few weeks, you can expect it to have all kinds of news, links, video, and especially humor. "It is easier for a humorist to be serious than a serious person to be funny." :)
Politics: Politics comes from the Greek 'poli' meaning 'many' and 'tics' meaning 'blood suckers'.
I Would Like to Meet You
There are about 47,000 registered voters in District 5. I really want to meet as many of my neighbors as possible between now and Election Day (November 4th, 2008). Please leave me a message at

on how to reach you and/or your group and we can set up a day and time for the two of us to meet.
I work for a living, so my campaigning time is limited. I will be going door to door, one precinct at a time, mostly after work and on weekends.
The Issues
There are several issues which are vitally important to me: Better Education; Lower Taxes; Fewer Taxes; The Environment; Good Jobs at Good Wages; and a bunch of others. But two issues stand out...
- Wasteful Government Spending. The Department of Motor Vehicles needed new computers. The legislature approved the purchase of new computers for $31 million. When the computers were installed, they didn't work. So, the legislature approved another $31 million to get those computers to work. Then, the legislature looked into how other states upgraded their computers for their Department of Motor Vehicles.
Before that boondoggle, the Department of Welfare needed new computers. The legislature approved the purchase for $11.5 million. You guessed it, those computers didn't work at first either.
What this all means is this... This legislature doesn't understand the value of our money. They are not good stewards of the public trust. "Government must come to understand that every dollar that it uses had to be first taken from a citizen who created it." We cannot afford this continued waste.
I pledge to do my best to reduce government waste and to be a good steward
- Partisan Politics. Politics seems to bring out the worst in people. Mud-slinging, name-calling, really uncivilized behavior. Most of the nastiness is across party lines. I'm tired of it. I believe a lot of people are also tired of it. A coworker told me, "Well, you're going into politics. You're gonna have to get down-and-dirty." I Refuse. I choose to see the best in people and that shapes how I interact with them. I don't care what party anyone belongs to. When it comes to serving the people, I can work with anyone.
I pledge to bring a new level of civilized and ethical behavior to the political arena. Yes, I'm an idealist. To me, that's a good thing.
Reasons I'm Running
In 2006, the race for Colorado House District 5 had only one candidate. This is the United States of America. There should always be a choice of two or more candidates for each office. In that voting booth two years ago, the idea of my running for this office came to me.
When there is something bothering people about their government, then they need to speak out. Unfortunately, politicians sometime have a problem hearing their constituents. Especially when the subject is change.
I know that if you want to change things for the better, then you have to do it from the inside. I'm an idealist and an optimist. I believe that I can and will make a positive difference in our state legislature.
The other reasons I am running I'll be happy to tell you, but I want to explain it face-to-face. Write me at

A Little History
I first took the nickname of JJ in September of 1979 when I started working for AT&T at the 52nd & Zuni office. There were 4 people on the work crew with the name of 'John'. So I got the nickname of JJ and it has stuck ever since.
I'm a telephone man. Blue collar. There isn't much in the phone company that I haven't done. I was also a teacher/course-developer for a while. So I've been both labor and management.
My family and I moved into this district 20+ years ago. While I and my wife are not native to Colorado, we both got here as quickly as we could.
